Draft EU Energy Strategy 2011-2020: We need your comments!

Our readers are invited to give their opinions to the European Commission on the newly released draft Energy Strategy for 2011 – 2020. The overall goal of European energy policy is to ensure that consumers and enterprises obtain safe, secure, sustainable and low-carbon energy at affordable and competitive prices. The challenges of global energy security and energy geopolitics, slow progress in combating climate change at the global level, the urge to recover on growth and jobs in the EU and the need to invest in tomorrow’s energy networks call for a new Energy Strategy to further deliver on those objectives.

Completing the internal energy market, achieving energy savings and promoting low-carbon innovation are the main vectors to reach the objectives of competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply. An open global business climate and a more coherent and effective approach to the EU external energy relations will also help us to reach our objectives.

The services of DG Energy have prepared a stock taking document with issues for consideration for further action. We would welcome your views on this document, which views will feed into the preparation of a new Energy Strategy that the Commission aims to adopt early next year.

Submissions are to be sent by email to ENER-ACTION-PLAN by 2 July 2010.

Please note that your submission will be published on the European Commission website unless you explicitly request (parts of it) to be considered confidential in your email.

The draft document can be read here.

This call for public consultations is sourced from the official call of for public consultations by the European Commission, DG Energy.

  1. As the article mentions, the 3 goals need to reach the security of sustainable environments would be:
    • Completing the internal energy market
    • achieving energy savings
    • promoting low-carbon innovation
I think that the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan could go a long way in improving the EU’s environmental sustainability through Carbon Capture and Storage technology and nuclear fission (COM, 2010, p. 3).
