Cyber-Physical Energy Systems:Focus on Smart Buildings

Control systems in modern buildings for heating, security, movement control, airflow and other core services increasingly utilise embedded computerised control systems, and information between these systems is routinely shared and integrated into each other’s functionality. In terms of energy usage, a modern building can be viewed as an example of a deeply coupled system of energy supply and usage, comfort and word derived. Seeing as buildings utilise roughly 70% of total electricity consumed and emit approximately 40% of green house gases annually, one of the greatest potentials for reducing green house gases is the use of integrated information and communication technologies already residing in the building.

Jan Kleissl and Yuvraj Agarwal of the University of California examined the energy use of different types of buildings and the opportunities available to improve energy efficiency through various strategies in their recent article titled Cyber-Physical Energy Systems: Focus on Smart Buildings. This worthwhile read provides not only background data, but practical approaches and strategies, using a modern 150,000 sq feet office building as a closed system, detailing different strategies to reduce energy use from LEED certification to zero net energy use.
