This communication highlights how the European Union contributes to global sustainable development and the action aimed at establishing a global deal for sustainable development. Details.

Strategy on the sustainable use of natural resources
This strategy creates a framework for action aiming to reduce the burden on the environment from the production and consumption of natural resources without penalising economic development. Concerns about resources will be addressed in all relevant policies and specific measures will be put into effect, notably the setting up of a centre for data and indicators, a European forum and an international expert group. Strategy on the prevention and recycling of waste
This strategy sets out guidelines and describes measures aimed at reducing the pressure on the environment caused by waste production and management. The main thrust of the strategy is on amending the legislation to improve implementation, and on preventing waste and promoting effective recycling. Details.

The Global Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Fund
A proposal has been made to set up a Global Fund of risk capital with a budget of 100 million to mobilise private investment in projects promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy in developing countries and emerging economies. Details.

A programme for clean and competitive SMEs
To help small and medium-sized enterprises apply EU environmental legislation as well as possible, the Commission proposes an action plan for improving legislation and for environmental management tools, financial assistance, local expertise as well as communication and information. Details.

Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) (2007-2013)
In order to meet the objectives of the renewed Lisbon strategy, and thus stimulate growth and employment in Europe, a Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme CIP has been adopted for the period 2007-2013. The programme supports measures to strengthen competitiveness and innovation capacity in the European Union. It particularly encourages the use of information technologies, environmental technologies and renewable energy sources. Details.

Action plan in favour of environmental technologies
The European Union is adopting an action plan to promote environmental technologies (technologies whose use is less environmentally harmful than relevant alternatives) in order to reduce pressures on our natural resources, improve the quality of life of European citizens and stimulate economic growth. The action plan’s objectives are to remove the obstacles so as to tap the full potential of environmental technologies, to ensure that the EU takes a leading role in applying them and to mobilise all stakeholders in support of these objectives. A strategy for integrating the environment into EU policies
The Cardiff process is designed to introduce a horizontal approach to environment policy by incorporating it into all Community policies. Details.
